Harvey Thrillers also brought us the awesome Thrill-O-Rama #2, giving us not one, but two memorable comic book characters, Pirana, Deadliest Creature in all the World & Clawfang the Barbarian! Pirana was created by writer Otto Binder & Jack Sparling while Clawfang appears to be one of Jim (Nick Fury) Sterankos creations for the Harvey Thrillers headliner, legendary Joe (Captain America) Simon.
Pirana's story starts out as Oceanography Institute researcher Edward Yates, offering himself as a guinea pig in an experiment designed to enable humans to live under water. Unfortunately, he found himself transformed so he could only live under water. Additionally, Pirana's enhanced mental activity was accompanied by crackles & sparks around his head, capable of powering a radio. He took on ocean-going villains, complemented by jet-powered web fins and a spear gun, aided by his piranapets, appropriately named Bara and Cuda.
Jim Steranko's Spacewolf appears to be Clawfang, from Thrill-O-Rama #2 & Unearthly Spectaculars #2. Clawfang was written by Wally Wood & illustrated by Al Williamson! |

I enjoyed the layout of telling the story in chapters. I trust you've enjoyed the Harvey Thrillers as much as I have, or plan to check them out. You can't ask for much better Silver Age adventure and fun. Great stuff!
Live Large My Friends!
Thank You!
Some of the original Jack Sparking original art for Pirana! Sweet! |
Another series I would love to read. I had an issue of this about a decade ago until my home was burgled. How I wish Harvey, Archie, and the other publishers would collect this stuff in paper or hardback.
