How many of you recall Barry Windsor-Smith doing Ka-Zar? He was featured in Astonishing Tales #2 through #6. Unfortunately, this was his last issue of Astonishing Tales.
Beyond the cold Antarctic wastes, in the depths of a secret hidden jungle, Ka-Zar rules the Savage Land. Populated by dinosaurs, barbarians and saber-tooth tigers, this land time forgot is threatened from beyond its borders by enemies including Kraven the Hunter and madmen still fighting World War II. From within, by the bizarre Garokk the Petrified Man and the sunpriestess Zaladane.
Cover by "Big" John Buscema & John Verpoorten.
"Ware the Winds of Death"
Introduction of Damon the Man-God and his subsequent attack on the Savage Land. Also introduces Bobbi Morse (my favorite character in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on TV) and Tongah's sister and brother, Tatia and Emuel.
Written by Gerry (Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man) Conway with art by Barry (Windsor-) Smith & Bill (Sub-Mariner, Daredevil) Everett.
Barry Smith's pencils were very strong in these issues. His style really asserting itself, defining his measure as a top notch comic book artist. His breakthrough comic book, Conan the Barbarian, was coming soon.
Highly Recommended classic collection of Ka-Zar!
Here's some original art I love to share, when I can find it.
Hope you enjoyed this amazing trip down memory lane as much as I have.
Chuck Dixon & Ferocious Frank Teran's Ka-Zar of the Savage Land was another favorite of mine. I miss seeing Teran's work!
Here's Barry Smith's first illustration featuring Ka-Zar. George Tuska drew the interior story.
One of my faves, Chris Claremont & Michael Golden blowing us away with his Ka-Zar and the Savage Land.
Bruce Jones knocked it out of the park with his work on Ka-Zar the Savage. Brent Anderson & Armando Gil handled the illustrations for the majority of the series.
