"Can This Be Tomorrow?"
One of my favorite comic book stories of all time is Children of Doom from Charlton Premiere #2, written by Sergius (Denny O'Neil) O'Shaugnessy & Pat (Peacemaker) Boyette.
The standout issue, through circumstances detailed in the letters page, Denny O’Neill wrote the story against a really short deadline, and came up with an inventive tale of a doomsday device constructed to trigger and destroy Earth upon detection of atomic power.
Starting out in a cinematic black & white, Children of Doom changes to full color and gray tone throughout for dramatic effect. Effective, a prime example of Pat Boyette at his very finest.
The Doomsday device, intended to hold the planet to ransom and deliver a new age of peace, instead, devastates the planet, transforming humanity. It's evokes a grim vision of the future as provocative as any novel or movie.
This story is also reprinted in Charlton's Space War #32 (although it may be edited by one page in this reprint!)
