BARRY WINDSOR-SMITH'S UNPUBLISHED KULL OF ATLANTIS !!!

Before there was Conan, there was King Kull. The mystic work of sword and sorcery was presented in comic books such as Tower of Shadows, Savage Sword of Conan, Creatures on the Loose and Kull the Conqueror, just to name a few.

Joe Kubert illustrates Conan, Kull & Solomon Kane!
One of my favorite covers featuring King Kull!

Set in ancient, lost Atlantis, the King Kull stories take place mainly after the barbarian has already come to power as King of Valusia.

Dynamic Lou Feck cover!
Wish I had this Kull statue in my collection.
In the comics, "Kull of Atlantis" remains as an incomplete and unpublished work by Barry Windsor-Smith. According to the splash page notes in Savage Sword of Conan #3, Barry Smith and Roy Thomas were planning a paperback comic book dealing with the early days of Kull. The paperback never happened, but Smith did a number of finished drawings in preparation for the book. Some of those drawings (8 pages) are also presented in Savage Sword of Conan #3, with quotations from the story "Exile Of Atlantis" by Conan scribe Robert E. Howard.

Savage Sword of Conan #3
Cover illustrated by Michael Wm. Kaulta.
"Kull of Atlantis"
Sareeta, an Atlantean who married a Lemurian pirate, has been captured after being washed ashore when the pirate ship was broken. As Kull arrives, she is about to be burned for bringing shame to Atlantis. With her nodded assent, he hurls his dagger just under her heart, killing her instantly to spare her an agonizing death. Kull's tribesmen chase him with the intent of slaying him for violating their code of morals, but are unable to catch him.
Script by Robert E. Howard with art by Barry (Windsor-) Smith.
Reprinted in Conan Saga #51 with a striking cover by Nestor Redondo (Swamp Thing.)

A nice line art cover reprint from Joe Jusko!
Dark Horse Comics has reprinted much of the Kull comics in their Chronicles of Kull trade paperback. Writers featured are Roy Thomas (Conan the Barbarian), Gerry Conway (TV's Law & Order), Doug Moench (Master of Kung Fu), Don Glut (Star Wars) & Bruce Jones (Somerset Holmes.) Artists featured are Bernie Wrightson (Swamp Thing), Marie Severin (Not Brand Echh), John Severin (Sgt. Fury), Mike Ploog (Ghost Rider), John Buscema (Silver Surfer), Howard Chaykin (Black Kiss), John Bolton (Marada) & Ernie Chan (Claw.)
