IN THE DISTANT FUTURE - CLAWFANG THE BARBARIAN !!!

 

We were introduced to the barbaric world of Clawfang the Barbarian in Harvey Thrillers Thrill-O-Rama #2. Shortly thereafter came Unearthly Spectaculars #2 not only reprinting the fantastic introduction, but also presenting us with a thrilling new Clawfang short story. Legendary Wally Wood was the writer with the fantastic Al Williamson handling the artistic chores.

A barbarian society, emerging after a devastating nuclear war was the product of society rebuilding itself. Clawfang lead a desperate band of raiders against the all-consuming empire of the cat-like Felina.

Clawfang though, as his men are defeated and after some tense negotiation, ends up becoming her warrior  slave. Barely agreeing to the terms, they're attacked by blind subterranean "norns" who drop them into a weird underground chamber.

Further interrupting their attempts at codifying their relationship is that they stumble onto a hidden laboratory, the owner of which sleeps in frozen slumber on a slab smack dab in the middle of it. Dr. James King, the awakened scientist, turns out to be violent and Clawfang has to dispatch King, leaving him to ponder what truly his world has become.

A special focus on Joe Simon's "Harvey Thriller" line ran in Comic Book Artist #19, with such heroes as Jigsaw, Spyman, Tigerboy, Miracles Inc., Earthman and Clawfang the Barbarian!

I would have loved to see more Clawfang the Barbarian, at least a full comic book. Alas, we were left only scratching the surface of his fantastic adventures in a futurist, barbarian world.
